This isn’t actually a recipe for ham, but rather for a ham blanket. If you’ve never used one to bake your ham, you could be missing out on the juiciest, most tender ham you’ve ever eaten.
This is an old fashioned way of baking a ham that my wife learned from her grandmother. If you’ve read this site much, you’ll know that my wife was definitely heavily influenced by her grandmother’s cooking skills, techniques and knowledge. Her grandmother told her that “way back when”, people would actually bring their ham to the butcher, and he would make the blanket for them. Or of course, they could order the blanket with the ham.
It’s very simple to do, just be sure to put a piece of foil on the bottom of your pan, or the ham blanket will stick to the bottom of your baking pan.
This recipe makes a blanket big enough to easily cover up to about an 8 pound ham.
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 8 cups flour
Preparation
- Mix the flour and water together with your hands until it forms a ball. Hint: It forms a large ball, using your hands is much easier!
- On a cheese cloth or your preferred surface, sprinkle some flour on the ball and on the surface and roll it out to about 1/4" thick. Place the ham in the center of the blanket and fold the blanket around the ham. Pinch together to seal it shut around the ham.
- Bake in the oven at 300° F. for 3 hours. (Don't forget to put a piece of foil between the bottom of the pan and the blanket).
- Once the ham is cooked, just break up the blanket, toss it, and enjoy the juiciest, most tender ham you've ever eaten!
Here is what things look like at the start of the process.
And here is what you end up with. Nice and tender!
