Smoked Wonton Ham & Pineapple Appetizers

Here’s the third wonton appetizer for cooking on the smoker. Cooking these on the smoker add such a nice twist to the flavor. As mentioned in the first of these appetizers, “Smoked Wonton Ranch Chicken Appetizer“, we typically cooked these for family get-togethers in the oven. So far, this is the last one we’ll be doing, but then, you never know for sure. Our second one was the “Smoked Wonton Taco Appetizer“.

On this one, the pineapple gave it a nice little tang! After all, ham and pineapple go together like America and apple pie!

The results? The filling cooks just fine, and that was my main concern. If you like a thicker wonton, I’m including our homemade wonton recipe, but the ingredients call for the store bought wrappers that are already very thin.

So give it a try. The filling is delicious!

For reference, here is our recipe for making your own wontons. Which is what we do. (Recipe was taken off the internet, but not sure of the link)

Wonton Wrappers

Ingredients

1 egg
¾ teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 to ½ cup water

Preparation

1) Lightly beat the egg with the salt. Add ¼ cup water.

2) Sift the flour into a large bowl. Make a well in the middle and add the egg and water mixture. Mix in with the flour. Add as much of the remaining water as necessary to form a dough. (Add more water than the recipe calls for if the dough is too dry).

3) Form the dough into a ball and knead for about 5 minutes, or until it forms a smooth, workable dough. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out until very thin, and cut into 3 ½ -inch squares.

Smoked Wonton Ham & Pineapple Appetizers

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) package wonton wrappers
  • 1 pound finely diced ham
  • 1 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup asiago cheese
  • ½ cup crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1 cup lite Miracle Whip

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray miniature muffin pan with cooking spray.
  2. Insert wonton wrappers into the muffin pan to form small cups. Bake 5 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow the baked wrappers to cool. Remove from pan.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix the ham, cheeses, pineapple and Miracle Whip. Fill the baked wonton wrappers cups with mixture.
  4. Get the smoker going. I used plum wood for this, but you can use any wood of your choice. But I do recommend using a light wood so you don’t over-power it with smoke favor. Get the smoker temperature up to about 275 degrees F.
  5. Once the smoker is settled in at around 275 degrees F, place them in a foil baking pan and place this into the smoker. Cook until the meat is bubbly and slightly brown. This will take almost 1 hour. Check it at about 45 minutes.
  6. Note: As an alternative to smoking these, bake them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 25 to 30 minutes.
  7. This should make about 48 appetizers.
