I see all the time where part of the instructions for grilling is to oil the grate before putting the food on it to keep the food from sticking. Actually, this is only creating a build up on the grate that makes it that much harder to clean.

A better way is to lightly oil the surface of the food before you put it on. You can use a nice canola spray for instance in a spray can. A light coating will do the trick for you, and you’ll never even notice it when the food is done.

I do this all the time when I make burgers on the grill. I do a lot of ground chicken patties on the grill, and this works well, because the ground chicken is a mess if you don’t coat it lightly with oil first. The first time I cooked these, I dropped them right onto the hot grill. I lost half of the meat when I went to flip it with a spatula. Trust me, I only did that once!

So, spray the food, not the grill!
